Jill and I recently filmed a YouTube video tutorial on how to make earrings, and I admit, we’re a bit goofy, but if you’d like to check it out to see the techniques in detail, or just want to have a bit of our sparkling personalities, you can view the video here.

Materials for easy and elegant wire and gemstone earrings
You will need
About 7 inches of 20 gauge round wire (I used round, half hard gold filled wire from Fire Mountain Gems)
About 7 inches of 26 gauge round wire (I used round, dead soft gold filled wire from Fire Mountain Gems)
2 briolette beads (teardrop shaped stone with a hole drilled through the narrow part of the bead) about 10mm or larger (I used a lace agate 15mm briolette)
Round nosed plyers (made for jewelry or from a mini-plyers set)
Small wire cutters
Something round, like a pill bottle or a marker with an even shaft
How to make earrings with wire and gemstones tutorial
These are so easy!
Step 1: Take your 20 gauge wire (the thicker wire) and cut it into 2 pieces of about 3.5″ each – for shorter, daintier earrings, cut them shorter
Step 2: Bend each piece of wire in half. A good way to do this is to place your round nose plyers right in the center, and then use your fingers to move one end down. You don’t need to bend it all the way down, just get a good crease.
Step 3: Using your round nosed plyers, make a simple loop at one end of the wire. Place your roundnose plyers a few mm from the end and then bend it toward you to create a loop.
Step 4: Optional. Use your round pill bottle or marker to gently bend the wire into a leaf shape. Place the V of your wire around the round shape and just very gently bend it. This is just to give the earwire a pretty shape.
Step 5: Cut your smaller 26 gauge wire in half. Thread your briolette bead through it so you have about 1 inch on one side and more on the other. Form an X over the bead with the wire and twist to enclose the bead.
Cut off the short end of the wire as close as possible to the other wire. Now, use your round nose plyers to create a closed loop over the bead. Just place your round nose plyers on the wire and wrap it around one nose of the plyers with your finger. Then wrap the rest of the wire under the loop to secure it.
Now, go back to the 20 gauge wire and open the simple loop using your round nosed plyers. Place the plyers flat against the loop and move the loop away from the wire (you don’t want to “unwind the loop” you want to open it horizonally. Slip your wrapped gemstone on the loop and close.
That’s it! If the earwire is too poky for your ears, you can file it down with a nail file.
There! You just learned how to make earrings. Are these not the literally easiest earrings ever? And if you make them with nice wire and a nice stone, they look like they are worth a lot.
