How I plan to transform my small, outdated 1990’s master bathroom into a timeless, modern, eclectic space with a bathroom makeover.

I am so excited for my master bathroom makeover! I don’t know why I haven’t done this sooner. Well, actually I have done this sooner, but it never really became the bathroom of my dreams. I have changed a few things since we moved into our home about four years ago: painted the walls and vanity, marble contact papered the counter, changed the light fixture, but the vision never really came together as I planned in this bathroom. This time is different. I AM READY! I have a perfectly articulated plan in hand and am committed to finishing my timeless, modern, eclectic bathroom makeover within the next three months.

Bathroom Makeover Before

New White Paint

Before we moved into our home I removed all of the popcorn ceilings (YAY! So glad I took the time to do that) and primed and painted them. It was a fair amount of work and I know my husband and family thought I was crazy for taking the time to do it, but I just COULD NOT LIVE WITH THEM (the popcorn ceilings, not the family). Then I painted every wall and piece of trim in this place. I chose the color for this bathroom because I saw it on a blog and liked it. I think it is called moonshine. Lesson learned: do not pick a paint color for a room without trying it out in that room first. It was ok at first, but then the gray color that I had imagined started appearing almost blue green to me and I didn’t like it.

New bathroom wall color: white. Am I the only person to have ever said “I’m nervous about painting my bathroom white?” Well, I am because I’m hoping that it won’t be too stark, cold, boring. I already screwed up with the moonshine color and got stuck with it for four years. But I’m ready this time. I’ve tested three different whites out on the bathroom walls and I’m going for it! Benjamin Moore white dove it is! …I think.

Bohemian and Eclectic Bathroom Accessories

The ladder shelf thingy, behind the toilet, is a leftover from my modern farmhouse phase. As you can see, I don’t really use it as much of a shelf or a hand towel rack, as it was intended, and it’s no longer my style, so it’s got to go.

Originally, I thought I was going to replace the ladder shelf thingy with a diy macrame shelf. But then I got to thinking, why replace one shelf I don’t use with another shelf I won’t use. So, I’m still deciding on that. I want to put something on the wall behind the toilet, but it may end up being artwork or a macrame plant hanger instead. I will have to see how the room evolves.

The almond colored toilet is leaving too. It will be replaced with a new timeless white chair height toilet.

New Modern Wood Vanity

When we moved in the vanity was an orangey colored oak cabinet with a blue laminate countertop and a beige sink. I painted the sink white, covered the countertop with marble look contact paper and painted the cabinet, but it never lived up to it’s full potential. I think it is time for a more timeless look vanity, more like a piece of furniture than a built in cabinet, with a marble counter (still laminate but a step up from contact paper) with a real white sink and black faucet.

I’ll be replacing the current bathroom vanity with a modern bathroom vanity cabinet that I will be building myself. I’ve gotten a little bit of furniture building under my belt over the past few years and I have come up with a plan to build a vanity cabinet that will look pretty, add warmth and a natural texture to the space and will meet my needs better. It’s going to be made of oak, with a modern base with legs, and have a space that opens with doors and a couple of drawers where I can organize the items I use daily and keep out of sight.

I’ve looked into buying a solid surface countertop for this bathroom, but after talking to the salesperson, I decided that it just didn’t make sense to spend hundreds of dollars on one, for me. Instead, I am going to go with a modern marble looking laminate by Stretta. This is what I love about this countertop: look of marble but less expensive and probably easier to take care of, modern look laminate countertop without the built in backsplash, easy diy installation (I hope!).

Modern Timeless Lighting

If I had to pick one part of this bathroom that really got this makeover ball going, I would have to say it was the light. I chose and replaced this bathroom vanity light myself, and it is better than the 90’s brass one that it replaced, but I think it is too big. Three’s always look better than fours, in lights, in arrangements of decor pieces, in art on a wall. It’s just a fact. And that’s why I will be downsizing my bathroom vanity light to a beautiful three light, modern yet timeless black with brass accents, one. I think this will be the most expensive piece of my bathroom makeover. I found my light on the internet one day when I was down a, searching for a new bathroom vanity light rabbit hole, and I searched and searched for something comparable that was less expensive, but couldn’t find it. It’s the bathroom light of my dreams!

Shower Makeover

Someday in the long term plan I would love to replace this shower stall with a tiled shower that runs the whole length of this wall. I’m not sure why someone would stick a shower stall on the corner of an empty wall like this. I guess it makes a pretty good spot for the cat litter box for now. Keeping it real here, if you have a cat you have a cat box, right!?! I’ll have to get Kitty Kitty on here soon. Anyways, in the mean time, I am going to try to make the shower look more tolerable by spray painting the shower frame and shower fixtures black. IF I have time and energy left I am going to try to build a linen cabinet/cat box hider for the empty spot next to the shower where the cat box currently is.

Cement Tile Look Bathroom Floor

I almost forgot to talk about the floor! The floor looks exactly the same as when we moved in. It’s shiny, it’s random, it’s got weird yellow stains on it, but it’s in good condition. In the past, I’ve thought about installing something like peel and stick tiles or floating laminate floor over it. I think someday, when I renovate this space, I will probably put some type of tile in here. For now, I’m going to paint the floor, in shades of white and gray, with a cement tile stencil. I’m also very nervous about this because I’m worried whether it will hold up. But, I’ve seen plenty of other people do it on Pinterest and they claim it works, so I’m going to give it a go.

Now, let’s take a look at the pretty inspiration board for my new and improved timeless, modern, eclectic small master bathroom makeover.
