Curious about how to incorporate beautiful crystals into your home? I’ll show you how I made a simple piece of wall decor with crystals and share what I’ve been learning about healing crystals recently.

I’ve been curious about crystals for a while. I bought a rose quartz and an Amythest several months ago, on a whim, at T.J. Maxx because I liked the way they looked and thought it could add some more natural elements to my decor. Then I came up with this project and I thought I should learn more about crystals if I’m going to have so many of them in my home. There’s a lot to know about crystals and I’ve only just begun learning about them. The following information is by no means from an expert. It’s just information I have been learning lately about healing crystals.

What Are Crystals?

Crystals are formed by the earth during complex organic processes. I call them pretty rocks. There are many different kinds of crystals. Each is found naturally in the earth and found in the geographical location that it is formed. Many people believe that crystals can be used to heal the human mind, body and soul. Crystal healing is a kind of alternative therapy.

Amythest Crystal

One example of a healing crystal is Amythest. Amythest is found in many different places around the world including several states in the United States, Brazil, Uruguay and Zambia.

How do Healing Crystals Work?

The idea is that healing crystals have vibrating energy and can be used to interact with your body’s energy field. The human body is said to have seven main energy points, called chakras, that run along our spine. Each chakra corresponds with certain parts of our mind body and spirit. If a chakra gets blocked or out of balance there can be physical, psychological, or spiritual symptoms. Many people believe crystals can help bring balance into our body’s energy points.

Each crystal is thought to have certain healing properties or powers. For instance, rose quartz is said to be the love crystal. It is believed to have loving energy that may help with relationships and self-love.

How to Use a Healing Crystal

There are many different ways to use a healing crystal to try to make a difference in your physical, psychological and spiritual health. Most of the ways you would use a crystal center around focusing your energy on the crystal, and using positive thoughts, to help you achieve improvement in a physical, emotional or spiritual area of your life.

  • Carry a crystal with you in your pocket or purse.
  • Wear a crystal as jewelry.
  • Have crystals in your home.
  • Place a crystal on your body and meditate.

How to Choose a Crystal

There are a few different ways for someone to choose a healing crystal for themselves. One way is to use your intuition to choose a crystal that you are drawn to. When I was choosing crystals for this project, I looked at a lot of different ones online and decided I wanted certain colors: red/terracotta, pink and blue. Then I chose crystals that were those colors that were available.

Another way to choose a healing crystal for yourself would be to research the properties and powers of the different crystals and choose one that you think will help you improve a symptom you are having or call into your life something you are looking for. I have read that not all crystals work the same for each person. I have also read that you should explore what it is that you are looking for from the crystal thoroughly so that you choose a crystal with the true property you are looking for.

For example, you may believe that you need help lowering the amount of negative energy around you. But in reality, you may be bringing the negative energy on yourself, and you may need help achieving love for yourself, which may help you feel more positive.

Cleansing Your Crystals

When you acquire your crystals it is recommended that you cleanse them. The reason why they need to be cleansed is because they have likely been touched by many other people on their way to you. That means that they have collected energy, good and bad, from each person who has touched them. That energy needs to be “cleaned out” of the crystal so it can be ready for you to use it.

There are many different ways to cleanse a healing crystal:

  • salt water
  • running water
  • other crystals that have cleansing properties
  • full moon
  • moon water
  • visualization
  • incense or herbs

Not every crystal can be cleansed the same way. For instance, it is not recommended to cleanse Amythest using sun light because it can fade its color. And it is not recommended to cleanse “soft” crystals in water or salt water because it could damage them.

How to Make Wall Decor with Crystals

I’d been racking my brain trying to figure out what I wanted for framed wall decor for my bathroom makeover. Then, one day when I least expected it, I ran into a cool piece of framed artwork at HomeGoods. It was a whole bunch of small pieces of Amythest that had been attached inside a shadow box frame. The piece of art was much larger than what I was looking for for my small bathroom, but I thought to myself “I could make something like that!”

Supplies

Prepare Your Crystals

After I received my crystals in the mail and before I used them in this project I cleansed them. This step is optional, but after reading so much about crystals I chose to cleanse mine before starting this project. I’ve explained why cleansing your crystals is important and different options for doing so above. Basically, I wanted to remove the energy of the other people who had touched the crystals on their way to me.

The way I decided to cleanse my crystals was to submerge them in flowing salt water in the waves of the ocean. I love the ocean and I had read that you can cleanse your crystals in salt water or in flowing water and this idea came to me. I gathered them in cheese cloth and made a safe little bag for them by tying a piece of string at the top. Then I drove to the beach and walked into the ocean and let waves wash over them. There are many different ways to cleanse crystals. Do whatever feels right to you, or don’t do it at all. It’s up to you.

Cut Out Foundation for Crystals

First, I traced the removable back piece of the frame onto a piece of poster board. I cut on the lines I had just traced and then placed that piece into the frame to make sure it fit. This will be the foundation that you will hot glue the crystals to in the next step.

Arrange Crystals

Next, I placed my frame mat on top of my poster board foundation so I could see how large of a space I had to arrange my crystals. Then I dropped my handful of crystals on my piece of poster board. After that I just moved the crystals into the design I wanted.

Glue the Crystals

Then, using a small amount of hot glue, I glued each crystal in place.

Finish Your Framed Wall Decor with Crystals

I place the frame mat into my shadow box frame. Then I layered the foundation with attached crystals and back of frame into the frame and secured it with the built-in frame tabs to keep everything in place.

Then I flipped my frame over and gazed in wonder and amazement at how simple it was to make a beautiful, natural, piece of framed wall art with crystals! I was so amazed I made three!

Tips for Success with this project

I would rate this project as beginner or easy. I really didn’t have many problems that I ran into during the making of this project. The one thing that you need to be mindful of is the size of your crystals so that they will fit in the shadow box frame. The crystals I used were labeled 1/2-1 inch. I wouldn’t recommend using any larger with the frame I used. You can always measure the depth of the frame you are using from glass to back panel to find out the largest crystal that would fit.
