What is Modern Boho Home Decor Style?

Modern bohemian or modern boho for short is a combination of two different interior design styles, modern and bohemian.

It’s actually kind of funny because it’s the combination of two opposite styles.

Modern decor style is associated with clean lines and structure.

Where Bohemian style is known for its “no rules,” or anything goes attitude.

I like modern bohemian style because I like to have some order in my home. I usually stick to modern pieces for the foundation and staple parts of my home, like cabinets and light fixtures.

Then I like to add bohemian handmade, natural, colorful, and global textures as accents.

Modern Entryway Shoe Storage

To improve my entryway shoe storage, I’ll be replacing my small shoe storage bench with a large cabinet to hold all the shoes.

I found a gorgeous, wrapped rattan storage cabinet at T.J. Maxx, but it wasn’t in my budget for this project, and I wasn’t able to find another one for sale like it.

So, I kept looking and decided on a modern white two door cabinet with chevron wooden doors and brushed brass hardware.

The beauty of modern boho style is that you can choose almost any style cabinet!

Bohemian Hanging Storage

To tame the clutter of jackets, purses, bags, hats, mittens, and stuff, I’ll be replacing my current coat rack and moving it.

I’ll add natural wood and a vintage piece to the entryway with an accordion coat rack that I found at the thrift store a few weeks ago. I’m planning on hanging it behind the entrance door to my home…with a twist! You’ll have to see what I mean in the entryway reveal post!

I plan on using pretty looking bags to hang on the rack to store all of the stuff.

See that blue grocery bag on the floor? That’s my husbands “lunch bag.” I talked him into trying a more esthetically pleasing waxed canvas grocery bag that he can store in the entryway without being an eyesore.

I also may add some baskets under the shoe storage cabinet to hide things.

Modern Bohemian Entryway Rugs

I’m getting a new machine washable rug!

I can’t wait! I’ve been looking online for the perfect one for days!

I used to have a washable rug here a couple of years ago. But it wasn’t the right size for the space, and, at the time, the right size wasn’t available in a washable rug.

So, I bought an indoor/outdoor rug (my current rug) because I figured I could hose it off when it got dirty.

But, I never have hosed it off and I want the convenience of throwing a rug right into my washer again.

Have you seen all of the washable rugs available these days? They have come a long way in the past few years.

It was a hard choice, but I chose a multicolored geometric rug to add some color to the space. I think I found my forever rug…for now!

Modern Bohemian Accessories

Modern Wall Mirror

I will definitely need a mirror above my new shoe storage cabinet to add light and make this small entryway feel a little bigger.

I’ve looked at all different types of mirrors for this space and I’ve chosen to go with a large black metal, arched mirror.

Sun Printing Wall Art

I looked and looked for something to hang on the blank wall leading to the kitchen. There are so many choices.

I thought about doing a larger variation of my DIY framed wall decor with crystals that I made for my bathroom a few months ago. But I want some large art on this wall. So, instead I decided on cyanotype prints.

I found some gorgeous large cyanotype prints for purchase on etsy. I’m using them for inspiration to make my own.

I’ve been wanting to try my hand at cyanotype for a while so here’s my chance! For those of you who don’t know, cyanotype is known as sun printing. Using specially treated paper or fabric you can use objects as negatives to make pictures in the sun. The part of the paper or fabric that doesn’t get covered with objects stays white and the rest turns a beautiful blue.

I’ll be using objects from nature to make the prints so my wall art will bring color and texture to the space.

Modern Lighting

I will add another layer of lighting with a modern brass lamp on the cabinet.

I don’t like to use the ceiling lights in my home most of the time. The light from them is so bright and alarming.

I prefer to turn on lamps and light candles at night, for a warm and relaxing atmosphere.

Houseplants

You cannot have modern boho design without plants!

I’m planning on having a potted plant on top of my new cabinet. But, other than that, I’m not 100% sure how I want to incorporate plants into this space. Do you have any ideas?

There isn’t a lot of space on the floor. I’ve thought about hanging plants.

We’ll have to see, but there must be plants!
