A lot of people became a bit obsessed with house plants during the pandemic. They brightened our days stuck inside and gave us something nice to think about. I really started my house plant jungle during COVID and I’m still going strong. But I’ve been struggling with keeping up how to care for my houseplants and all their specific needs. My solution: Printable house plant care cards that you can design and customize in Canva for free!

Why you need house plant care cards

While some houseplants come with care cards, many don’t. In fact, I’ve bought many plants where I didn’t even know what kind of plant it was! Creating your own houseplant care cards is a great idea because you can customize them with whatever info you want (light needs, soil needs, humidity, replanting schedule, etc.) and can design them with colors that match your decor. These cards are a nice size – big enough so they’re easy to read, but not too big that they overwhelm the plant.

How to set up a free Canva account

I’ve set up these houseplant care cards as a template in Canva so it’ll be very easy for you to cusomtize them and print them. If you don’t have a Canva account, you can easily create a free one and use this template just fine. They also have a pro vesion, which I have and use regularly for about $13 a month. But it’s totally not necessary for this project.

To set up a free account, go to Canva.com and click “sign up” in the top right corner. You can sign up using your Facebook account, Google acount, or your email. Just follow the prompts to get started.

Once you’re in, you can simply paste these template links into your browser.

How to use the printable houseplant care template

Once you have the template opened, you can change whatever you’d like, including:

The top image. You can upload images to Canva in the free version. So, if you wanted to make a card for an Aloe Vera plant, just go to Google image search and search for “aloe vera.” Save the image to your computer, than upload it to Canva using the Upload section on the left toolbar. Once it’s uploaded, drag it over to where the top image and wait until it snaps into place and fills the whole top section. Then let it go. Watch it on YouTube here.

To change the text, just click on the sections with text and change it to whatever you’d like. Find a reputable source for houseplant care to find the specific needs for your plant, and fill those into the plant care sections.

Once you’re done, click the Share button to download it as a .png file.

How to set up your houseplant care cards for printing

The easiest and most efficient way to print these out is to print out four at a time on an 8.5 X 11 sheet of paper or cardstock using this template that I set up for you.

Click on the template link to open it in Canva. Then upload the .png file that you just download and drag it into one of the four boxes. Make 3 more cards for other plants using the instructions above, and add them to your printing template. Then, download it as a pdf and print it out on your color printer. You can print it out on cardstock and then simply cut the four cards out using a paper cutter or scissors, and then use a card holder like this to stick them in your plants.

Another option is to use regular or nicer printer paper and then laminate the whole sheet. Then cut out the cards and add to your sign holder.

How to laminate your hosue plant care cards

If you have a laminating machine, I really like how these look laminated. It protects the cards from water and dirt and ensures that they will have a long lifespan. To laminate them, turn on your laminator and set it up to 3mm. Add your printed page of care cards and insert it into the laminator. Then, just cut the cards to size. It’s easiest to laminate first, then cut second.

Hi, I’m Larisa, one half of the Time on our Hands team. Despite living in suburbs and military bases in my youth, I always knew I was a country girl at heart. When I married my husband, Jon, we moved back to his home state of Maine where we’ve built a happy home in the woods and raised many fur babies including our 18.5 year old black cat, Gerry, and our three house bunnies, Albus, Jazzy, and James. My home is my haven and I love to work on projects that make it cozy and comfortable. There’s nothing I love more than a weekend of crafting, decorating, organizing, or just making something new! My favorite topics to write about are candles, crafts, and home décor. When I’m not making, blogging, or YouTubing, I work as a content strategist at a professional services firm.
