Small bathroom makeover with DIY vanity, linen cabinet and painted floor and bohemian accessories to create a beautiful, relaxing bathroom sanctuary.

Can I tell you a secret? I never knew I could love a bathroom so much. My made over modern bohemian bathroom sanctuary is so beautiful, that I finished it four days ago and I haven’t even used it yet. I just stand outside the door or take a step inside and stare at all of the pretty details.

Bathroom Before

I started this small master bathroom makeover about three months ago. This is what it looked like before I began. As I explained in the bathroom makeover plan post, I had done a few upgrades over the past four years: painted the walls and vanity, marble contact papered the counter, changed the light fixture, but the vision never really came together as I planned in this bathroom.

This is what this bathroom looked like about four years ago after we bought our home. The box you can see at the bottom of the picture is full of popcorn ceiling that I removed.

Shower Makeover

The first step in this small bathroom makeover was to spray paint the shower frame and fixtures black. I wanted to give the shower a quick and inexpensive makeover to try to make it look more modern, until I give it a full remodel in a few years.

I figured it would be the messiest part of this makeover, so I wanted to get it over with first. I had to do something to make this shower look more presentable. And guess what? I think it worked. What do you think? Does it look any better?

I followed this tutorial to spray paint the shower frame and this one to spray paint the fixtures. I’ll let you know how it’s holding up. It was an inexpensive way to find out if I like this look, and I do!

New White Paint

The second thing I did in this bathroom was paint the walls white. Remember how I agonized over the white walls in the bathroom makeover plan post? I chose Benjamin Moore White Dove for its warmer tone by trialing it on the walls of this room, against other whites.

And the good news is that I love it! I’ve decided to paint my bedroom white and give it a refresh in the near future! I’m a white wall paint convert!

Cement Tile Look Bathroom Floor

I’ve wanted a cement tile bathroom floor ever since I started seeing pictures of them pop up on Pinterest years ago. But for this bathroom makeover I just wanted to be able to easily and inexpensively cover up my old, ugly vinyl floor. So, the next step in my makeover was to paint my bathroom vinyl floor to look like cement tile.

I really like how the painted floor turned out and I like the bohemian/global vibe it adds to this bathroom that has a lot of modern touches now.

New Modern Wood Bathroom Vanity

I wanted to replace the old, painted 90’s vanity with a new vanity that looked more like a piece of furniture than a built in cabinet. So I came up with a plan to build this oak vanity cabinet myself. During the same time I was painting every surface in the bathroom, I was also building the new modern oak bathroom vanity cabinet.

I’m really happy with how it turned out. I like how the wood adds natural and warm properties to the space. It was starting to look very white, gray, and black in here before I installed the cabinet.

I also really like this marble look laminate countertop. It was easy to cut and install. It’s low profile and does not have attached back splash. I love the timeless feel of marble that it adds to the room.

Modern Timeless Bathroom Lighting

Once I got all the painting done and furniture built it was time to add all the pretty things.

If you remember from my original post on this bathroom, this light was the inspiration for the whole makeover. I wanted to replace my old four bulb vanity light with a three bulb light and found this one and fell in love with its modern, timeless, black and brass look.

New Toilet

Can we talk about this toilet for just a second? I am so glad we replaced our almond colored toilet with a chair height white toilet.

And I also installed this gorgeous black toilet flush handle to match the matte black fixtures in the room. It was the easiest thing I did in this bathroom makeover, literally took me five minutes. Definitely recommend, biggest bang for your buck, replace your chrome toilet flush handle even if it matches your fixtures…now.

Bohemian and Eclectic Bathroom Accessories

The next step in this small bathroom makeover was to add the bohemian accessories and cozy it up!

Like Larisa always says: “Cozy = Love.” For those of you who don’t know, Larisa is my sister-in-law and partner on this blog. I know, it sounds kind of strange to make a bathroom cozy. But I’m telling you, try it and you will know what it is like to own a designer bathroom. By adding layers of things you love to a space it makes it feel warm and special for you.

To add to the bohemian feel in the bathroom, first I made these diy framed wall decor with crystals to put on the wall behind the toilet.

Next, I made this macrame plant wall branch hanger for the small wall across from the vanity, to hold some of the plants from my exploding collection and add more color and natural elements to the room.

Then, I sprinkled some more plants throughout the space and added macrame accessories, candles, and a few other things that I have collected and love. I also added some antique brass metal elements to the room, instead of all black, to soften and warm the room up.

Linen Cabinet/Litter Box Hider

The last thing I did in this bathroom makeover was to build the modern oak linen cabinet and litter box garage. I’m so glad that I took the time to build it. More on this coming soon to the blog, but for now you get a sneak peek of the outside and the adorable cat entrance with macrame curtain.

I never thought I could love a bathroom so much. I can’t wait to light my candles, turn on some relaxing music, grab a shower steamer and take a relaxing shower. I never would have said that before I met this bathroom. It’s the modern bohemian bathroom sanctuary of my dreams.

What do you think? Would you like to make over your bathroom? What one thing would you change in your bathroom if you could?
